Ooops forgot George's Birthday

Yer Birthday and My Birthday too...........

Last Wednesday George Harrison would have been 66 years old. Jennifer forgot to remind me and so I didn't play any of his songs on the Red Neck Blue Collar Power Hour. We will make up for that little error by playing some George and the Beatles on All Vinyl Night March 2. It'll be sitars and Concert For The Bangladesh..........All Things Must Pass..................Traveling Wilburys

Next Feature Artists

While playing Jason Isbell, Mother Truckers and Bettye LaVette last night I came across two new cd's that will be our next feature artist Feb 23, Bloodkin and True Nature. Bloodkin is from Athens, Georgia and their new album is Baby, They Told Us We Would Rise Again. I played the song Rhododendron because it fits my criteria, its a long song and it rocks. Patterson Hood of The Drive By Truckers is a big fan of them. Bloodkin.net

True Nature is Lou Barlow NYC based singer/songwriter, Tony Levin Bassist (John Lennon and Peter Gabriel), Aaron Comess Drums (Founding member of the Spin Doctors) and Gerry Leonard Guitarist (David Bowie and Rufus Wainwright). Their new 5 song EP is called Feels Like Centuries. Tune in next week for Monday Edition of On The River with our feature artists True Nature and Bloodkin. truenatureband.com

Exquisite Corpse

Exquisite corpse is a collaborative poetry game. To write a poem writers agree on a sentence form before beginning. For example adjective, noun, adverb, verb, adjective, noun. Tenses and articles are added later. The only real rule is each writer is unaware of the previous words. So as the words are written the paper is folded and passed to the next writer. Hilarious and beautiful poems can result. Here are some results from the Valemtines Party:

The pretty lady slowly fished out a salty swimmer.

I was quickly blue in this city till I danced with a moody basketball.

The boy quickly jerked the disgusting puppy.

The beautiful flower quickly hunted shiny Mr. Taylor.

The smooth chainsaw slowly staggered towards the tall bear.

The flaming sky felt sassy, not grumpy, as it begin to run ooze.

Gentle moment of purple sky, the snotty nosed skier climbed upwards.

The sleazy Banana Slug slowly ran and kissed the sassy rat.

The bad Baboon stinking, jumped on the supper table.

The little bicycle slowly went smiling home.

Friday the 13th and Love Bites

These are entries to a Washington Post Competition for a two line rhyme with the most romantic first line and the least romantic second line:

My darling, my lover, my beautiful wife:
Marrying you has screwed up my life.

I see your face when I am dreaming.
That's why I always wake up screaming.

Kind, intelligent, loving and hot;
This describes everything you are not.

Love may be beautiful, love may be bliss,
But I only slept with you 'cause I was pissed.

I thought I could love no other
--that is until I meant your brother.

Roses are red, violets are blue, sugar is sweet, and so are you.
But the roses are wilting, the violets are dead, the sugar bowl's empty and so is your head.

I want to feel your sweet embrace;
But don't take that paper bag off your face.

I love your smile, your face, and your eyes
Damn, I'm good at telling lies.

My love, you take my breath away.
What have you stepped in to smell this way?

My feelings for you no words can tell,
Except for maybe 'Go to hell.'

What inspired this amorous rhyme?
Two parts vodka, one part lime.

Your turn now: two line rhyme----first one romantic----second line least romantic

Jason Isbell and The Drive By Truckers

Monday 16 Feb 09 On The River 7-10 and our featured artist will be Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit. Formerly a member of The Drive By Truckers Jason has broken away and formed a new group that has released a great new cd. I'll include some music from The Truckers too. I love The Truckers and the song "Daddy's Cup"....about the son of a stock car driver, not a hockey player.

And then stay tuned for Dug Baker and three more hours of OTR. Stay with him until one o'clock to hear the song that he ends every Monday night with........

STRAC

STRAC

Back in my day when you said a soldier was STRAC that meant he had his spit and polish together. He was squared away. He was sharp, smart and well prepared. It wasn't an official term but has since been officialized and means Skilled, Tough and Ready Around the Clock. Today I saw the honor guard at CWO Windorski's funeral and they were STRAC. These guys know what they're doing and they do it with great pride and perfection. Their uniforms were perfect. They moved with precise perfection. Their presence was awesome. I am impressed with the level of professionalism in our military today. They did CWO Windorski proud. RIP

Qualifications

All week we have been hearing about appointees dropping out because they forgot to pay their taxes. Former Senator Daschle forgot to pay over $150,000 in taxes. It would take most of us several years to make that amount of money let alone the taxable amount he forgot. Then he forgot to tell us about the driver and limo he was given for free. Oh yeah, there is also the $5,000,000 like in $5 million he got from the health care industry in 3 years for speaking engagements. These do not sound like qualifiers to me but more like disqualifiers. I am sorry folks, but when does the CHANGE begin??? The audicity I am seeing is the audicity of the same old politics. The more things change the more they stay the same.

See you On The River tonight.

Lots of music comes into the studios of KAXE every week and my job is to play it. Here's a little secret, my shows are based on these principals, 1. pick the newest 2. pick someone you know 3. pick the longest song 4. pick someone you don't know 5. repeat step 3. How does it work? Because Mark Tarner, Program Director and his alter ego, M. T. Hedd screen the music before it gets in the grubby hands of the on-air hosts. Here are 6 of the best new stuff I have been playing based on my criteria:
Pillbugs-Everybody Wants A Way Out
Umphrey's McGee-Mantis
The Showgoats-Lift Off
Heartless Bastards-The Mountain
Deleted Waveform Gatherings-Baby Warfare
Pavement-Brighten The Corners
Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit-(self-titled)
Tune in Friday night 10-1 to hear more from these new releases.
